Richard is so reticent that he is embarrassed to find himself celebrated as a local hero. The police hastily identify the victim as Freddy Russell, a wanted felon and lowlife, and they warn Richard that Freddy’s no-good father, Ben, a man just out of prison, could make trouble.

Sure enough, Ben (Mr. Shepard, at his most laconic and menacing) appears and begins stalking Richard. After one too many provocations, Ben is arrested and thrown in jail. But Richard, suspicious of the cut-and-dried handling of the case, begins sleuthing and is startled to witness the sheriff (Mr. Damici) and his deputies dragging Ben out of jail and tying him to a railroad track as a train approaches. Richard saves Ben’s life just in time, and an edgy rapport is established.

“Cold in July” goes gleefully haywire with the arrival of Jim Bob (Mr. Johnson), a swaggering private eye and pig farmer who dresses like a cowboy and drives a fire-engine-red convertible. As the movie’s resident live wire, Mr. Johnson, obviously having the time of his life, is a hoot, and the feisty camaraderie among these three men gives “Cold in July” a euphoric goofiness.

The film culminates with a protracted blood bath in a creepy mansion. The nervous Richard; the brooding, gun-crazy Ben; and the maniacally free-spirited Jim Bob might as well be colliding bumper cars at the wildest carnival this side of Houston.
